Gulf came into being nearly forty years ago and was initially engaged in civil construction and contracting. Shortly after, an association with the Kaiser Aluminum Company led to the successful creation of Alba, the first aluminum smelting company in Bahrain.

Gulf, then embarked on a major joint plan with Kaiser Aluminum to launch a massive joint venture including oil refining and aluminum smelting in Saudi Arabia. Athough this project faltered in its early stages, it nevertheless led Gulf to participate with Setco in planning and eventual development of the mammoth refining and petrochemical projects in Saudi Arabia. This development set the course for the emergence of gas and oil based process industries that expanded on a global scale.

Building on its success, Gulf moved to aggressively mastermind plans for the development of a world scale aluminum smelter in Dubai. Gulf provided the leadership in the process selection, design, finance, construction, operations, management and marketing. Dubai eventually grew into a massive world size plant supplying aluminum throughout the world.

Another success story in the annals of Gulf was in partnership with Occidental Petroleum when, through Gulf's efforts, Occidental, jointly with Gulf, acquired a major enhanced oil recovery project in Qatar. Gulf and Occidental also jointly developed a three block major gas exploration concession in Bangladesh which was eventually acquired by Chevron who, in turn, bought out Gulf's interest.

Currently, Gulf is again embarking on a leading effort in the areas of its hard won expertise: a major oil refinery in Asia, and an integrated power based aluminum smelter in the Arabian Gulf.
